In 2013 I spent five months on a story for Men’s Journal about a fugitive who was breaking into seasonal cabins in Utah. He had evaded authorities for almost a decade. I went down to Utah to join local authorities in a manhunt for him. He was elusive. But just before the story hit the racks, I got a call from Sevier County Sheriff Nathan Curtis. “We got him,” he told me. After eight years on the run, Troy James Knapp is back in jail. My feature story about him explores what drove him to live in the mountains alone, what he was running from, and what he found in Utah’s remote backcountry.
